Yeah, we do not eat normal in our house. Here’s a bit of how and why:
Our oldest has shown sensitivity to things you can’t seem to avoid. Things such as processed sugar, MSG, pasteurized dairy, yeast, soy (unless it is fermented) and other odd ball things. Talk about throwing out your pantry. If it doesn’t have sugar (corn syrup, or some type of -ose) in it, it likely has “natural flavors” and MSG is a typical natural flavor. The result has been a brand new life for us.
Typical foods in our house consist of fresh fruits and veggies, fresh (raw) milk, farm eggs, meats without nitrates or preservatives, rice dishes and rice pastas, raw milk yogurt and cheeses, and fermented foods such as soy or miso. We’ve saved for months to buy a great dehydrator that we are using to make our own fruit roll-ups, banana and apple chips, yogurt, beef jerky, and sprouted nuts.
The issue is how foods are digested and this seems to be helping not only our health, but our oldest’s ability to function like a normal child. If you want to look into this way of eating more, I’d love to email back and forth with you.
Also, search for info on Traditional Diets and you’ll come to a number of great resources for getting started. If we can eat it raw, we do, if not we do what needs to be done to prepare the food in a way for optimal digestion. After all, why eat food if it isn’t going to nourish you? I do admit, though, that I am having an awful time giving up my Cafe Sue Da (Vietnamese white coffee…think espresso with a healthy serving of sweetened condensed milk in it) and caramel apples.
I don’t know if this is a single author run site, but it is very very nice. So much fun, homeliness, real people oriented. Am bored up to my eyeballs seeing professionally done sites of everyday life with kids and work, where everyone is trying to outdo each other showing designations and achievements. This is a breath of fresh air and though I don’t have much reason to visit here except cross-reference that came on my site, I still stuck around to read many posts here. Great blog! Keep up the great work! And God bless the twins and the Jane and Liz. (Btw, I got twins as well, but 10 yrs+ now and have just stepped out to play in the neighborhood park)
Best Regards,
I’ve really enjoyed spending my “nap time” on your site today! It’s always so nice to find other people who are “trying” this traditional way of living! Thank you for showing it so well!
Hi Deanne! I just happened upon one of your comments on recipezaar that stated you do not use white sugar or white flour. So following the links, I got to your blog and I am hoping that you would have some time to email me. I recently was told that we need to cut out ALL sugar out of our daughter’s diet. Outside of the common things you would thing have sugar in them, I have found that pretty much EVERYTHING has sugar of some sort in it. So I have been a little frustrated, but know that I can do this, I just NEED help!! So, I would love to talk to you about what you feed your kids and if you have any recipes that you would like to share, I would be overjoyed. I think you will get my email, but if not, I will watch for follow up comments and then post my email for you. Thank you so much!!
Hi there. I own The Vegetarian Health Institute, and would love to reprint your fermented salsa recipe on our membership site. If this is OK, we would credit you and provide a link back to your site. Sound good?
