It’s the little things that make kids happy. Chocolate milk is one of those things. Not the sickeningly sweet store variety, and not the syrup laced home-made kind either. We have figured out a way to make it a bit of a nourishing treat. It works wonderfully for hot chocolate and the leftovers have even been known to become popsicles.
Chocolate Milk/Hot Chocolate
- 1/2 gallon of raw milk
- 3 Tbsp Cocoa
- 1/3 cup raw honey
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Slippery Elm Bark
For chocolate milk simply blend in a blender (or whisk) until smooth.
For hot chocolate, gently heat the milk, honey and cocoa in a pan whisking until smooth. Remove from heat and add vanilla and Slippery Elm Bark.
The Slippery Elm bark is a nutritious additive in this drink, some say as nutritious as oatmeal. It adds little flavor or texture to the final product. Sometimes for an extra boost, I will add a raw egg yolk or two (farm fresh, not store bought) to the blender.

Ooo, that looks yummy. I wonder how it would taste with rice milk?
That is interesting – I gave my kids slippery elm mixed with applesauce to help coat the throat from their reflux until it was resolved. I never knew it was nutritous!
